BaZi compatibility — called He Pan (合盘, Compatibility Chart) — goes well beyond asking whether two zodiac signs match. It reads the structural dynamics between two complete birth charts: how the Day Masters interact, how their elemental profiles complement or clash, and whether their timing is in alignment.
The primary compatibility indicator is the relationship between the two Day Masters — the heavenly stems of each person's day pillar. There are five celestial combinations (天干五合, Tian Gan Wu He) that create especially natural affinity:
When two people's Day Masters form one of these combinations, there is a natural pull between them. Beyond combinations, a generating relationship (one element feeds the other) creates nurturing dynamics; a controlling relationship (one element restrains the other) creates tension that can manifest as either attraction or friction depending on chart strength.
The Spouse Palace (配偶宫, Pèi Ǒu Gōng) is the day branch — the earthly branch of the day pillar. In a compatibility reading, the relationship between the two day branches is particularly significant:
A complete compatibility reading looks at how the element profiles of both charts interact. If one person is weak in Wood and the other is strong in Wood, there is a natural complementarity — the Wood-rich partner nourishes the Wood-deficient one. A reading that analyses the full element distribution of both charts identifies where the pair is balanced, where they complement each other, and where they may both lack the same element.
The Ten Gods of one person's chart are assigned by their relationship to the other person's Day Master. This reveals how each person experiences the other: as a resource, a peer, a source of challenge, or as a wealth or authority figure. A person whose stems appear as Officer in their partner's chart is experienced as structured and stabilizing. A person whose stems appear as Output is experienced as creative and expressive.
Even two highly compatible charts can experience friction when their luck cycles are pulling in different directions — one person in a wealth-building decade while the other is in a resting or consolidating period. A complete compatibility reading includes an assessment of whether the current luck cycles are working in harmony or creating parallel pulls.
BaZi compatibility compares two people's charts through four main lenses: Day Master harmony, elemental exchange, spouse palace contact (day branches), and whether their luck cycles align or diverge.
The spouse palace (配偶宫) is the day branch — the earthly branch of the day pillar. The relationship between the two people's day branches is a key indicator of relationship dynamics.
The five celestial combinations (甲己, 乙庚, 丙辛, 丁壬, 戊癸) create natural affinity, but compatibility requires reading the whole chart — element distribution, spouse palace, Ten Gods and timing.
