One of BaZi's most powerful features is its system of timing. Rather than relying on your natal chart alone — which remains fixed — BaZi reads life through a series of evolving luck pillars that shift every decade. These are called Da Yun (大运, Major Luck Cycle).
Each Da Yun is a stem-branch pair that acts as a second layer overlaying your natal chart for approximately ten years. Every person moves through a sequential series of these pillars — typically eight to ten cycles in a lifetime. The Da Yun doesn't change who you are; it changes the energetic environment you're operating in, amplifying certain qualities and creating either supportive or challenging conditions depending on how its elements interact with your natal chart.
Da Yun are derived from the month pillar of your natal chart — the same pillar that reflects career, character and life direction. The direction of calculation depends on your gender and the polarity of the year stem:
The starting age of the first Da Yun is determined by how many days lie between the birth date and the next (or previous) solar term, converted at a rate of three days per year. This means one person might enter their first major luck cycle at age 3, another at age 8.
When a new Da Yun begins, its stem and branch are added to the chart as a fifth pillar. The stem (uppermost character) tends to be felt during the first five years; the branch (lower character) during the second five years — though in practice both are present throughout.
The key question is: how does this pillar's element interact with your Day Master and your favorable elements? A Da Yun that brings your useful element can represent a period of growth and opportunity. One that brings a conflicting element may represent challenge, change, or the need to work harder.
On top of the natal chart and Da Yun, there are two additional timing layers:
The interaction between all three layers — natal chart, current Da Yun, and Liu Nian — gives a picture of what energetic themes are active in any given year. A year when your favorable element arrives in both the Da Yun and Liu Nian is typically one of the strongest periods for growth.
Da Yun (大运) is a ten-year period represented by a stem and branch pillar derived from the natal chart. Each person moves through a series of Da Yun that overlay the natal chart and shift the energetic quality of that decade.
Da Yun are calculated from the month pillar. For Yang males and Yin females, the pillars count forward from the birth month. For Yin males and Yang females, they count backward. The starting age is determined by the number of days to the next or previous solar term.
Liu Nian (流年) are the annual pillars that add a third layer of energy on top of the natal chart and the current Da Yun. Together, natal + Da Yun + Liu Nian give a three-level picture of any given year.
