The 10 Gods (十神): BaZi's Relational Archetypes
The Ten Gods are the relational language of BaZi. Each stem in your chart is assigned a name based on how its element interacts with your Day Master's element — whether it generates, controls, is generated by, or is controlled by the Day Master. These names — the Ten Gods — carry precise psychological and life-theme meanings.
The Five Pairs of Ten Gods
The Ten Gods come in five pairs — one Yang (same polarity as the Day Master) and one Yin (opposite polarity):
1. Friends & Rivals (比劫, Bǐ Jié)
- Rob Wealth / Bi Jian (比肩) — same element, same polarity. Represents peers, independence, resilience, stubbornness.
- Rob Wealth / Jie Cai (劫财) — same element, opposite polarity. Represents competition, courage, impulsiveness, networking.
2. Expressive Output (食伤, Shí Shāng)
- Eating God / Shi Shen (食神) — the element your Day Master generates, same polarity. Creativity, nurturing, enjoyment, artistic expression.
- Hurting Officer / Shang Guan (伤官) — the element your Day Master generates, opposite polarity. Unconventional talent, rebellion, charisma, intellectual brilliance.
3. Wealth (财星, Cái Xīng)
- Direct Wealth / Zheng Cai (正财) — the element your Day Master controls, opposite polarity. Steady income, reliability, practical mindset, spouse (for men).
- Indirect Wealth / Pian Cai (偏财) — the element your Day Master controls, same polarity. Risk-taking, windfall, business acumen, speculative gains.
4. Authority & Status (官杀, Guān Shā)
- Direct Officer / Zheng Guan (正官) — the element that controls your Day Master, opposite polarity. Discipline, responsibility, law, social position, spouse (for women).
- Seven Killings / Qi Sha (七殺) — the element that controls your Day Master, same polarity. Ambition, power, pressure, leadership under stress.
5. Resources & Support (印星, Yìn Xīng)
- Direct Resource / Zheng Yin (正印) — the element that generates your Day Master, opposite polarity. Education, wisdom, compassion, maternal support, calm authority.
- Indirect Resource / Pian Yin (偏印) — the element that generates your Day Master, same polarity. Independence in learning, unconventional wisdom, specialised knowledge.
How Ten Gods Reveal Life Themes
The Ten God most prominent in your chart — appearing in the month pillar or reinforced across multiple pillars — tends to be a dominant theme in your life. A chart with strong Wealth stars may be driven by financial goals and practical results. One with strong Resource stars may be academic, introspective, or supported by mentors. A heavy Officer presence often indicates a drive for structure and social contribution.
The Ten Gods are also used to map relationships: for a woman, the Officer stars represent romantic partners; for a man, the Wealth stars. Children are often seen through the Output stars.
