The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — are not literal substances. They are five categories of energetic quality that describe how everything in the universe moves, grows, and changes. In BaZi they are the grammar through which character, relationships and timing are read.
Each element feeds the next in a circular pattern. This is called the sheng (生) — nourishing — cycle:
In a BaZi chart, when your favorable element generates your Day Master's element, that period or relationship carries supportive energy.
Each element also restrains one other in a skip pattern:
Control is not inherently negative — a chart that is too strong in one element may benefit from the element that controls it, creating balance.
Each element has a different strength depending on the season in which it operates. The five states are: Flourishing (旺, wàng), Supporting (相, xiàng), Resting (休, xiū), Imprisoned (囚, qiú), and Dying (死, sǐ). An element born in its peak season is at full strength; in an opposing season it is weakened.
Your BaZi chart's element distribution is calculated by assigning a score to every stem and branch — weighting the month pillar most heavily, since the season of birth determines the seasonal strength of each element. A chart with a balanced spread of elements is considered harmonious; a chart with a heavy concentration in one element may amplify the traits of that element while revealing gaps elsewhere.
Knowing which elements your chart is deficient in helps identify your Useful God (喜用神, Xǐ Yòng Shén) — the element that, when present in your luck cycles or environment, brings the most support.
The Five Elements (Wu Xing 五行) are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). They are not literal substances but dynamic energetic qualities that interact through generation and control cycles.
In BaZi your primary element is determined by your Day Master — the heavenly stem of the day pillar. There are two stems for each element: Jia and Yi Wood, Bing and Ding Fire, Wu and Ji Earth, Geng and Xin Metal, Ren and Gui Water.
Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth produces Metal, Metal holds Water (condenses), Water nourishes Wood. This is the Sheng cycle — generation.
Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. This is the Ke cycle — control or restraint.
