Qianli Minggao (千里命稿)

Qianli Minggao (千里命稿, literally "Thousand-Mile Fate Draft") is one of the most beloved and concise works in the BaZi classical canon. Written by Wei Qianli (韦千里, 1911–1988) — one of the most celebrated Chinese astrologers of the 20th century — it distils decades of practical chart-reading experience into a compact, accessible volume.

About the Author

Wei Qianli was a Shanghai-born astrologer who learned BaZi under his father and became a practising consultant from a young age. Unlike earlier classical texts written in cryptic verse, Qianli Minggao is written in clear prose, making it highly approachable for students. Wei's approach emphasised practical case study analysis over theoretical abstraction, and he organised the text around real-world life themes: career, wealth, marriage, children, health, and character.

The text is organised thematically:

Wei Qianli's Contribution to Modern BaZi

Wei Qianli's work helped bridge classical BaZi theory with the modern, urban world. He was among the first major authors to discuss BaZi in the context of 20th-century life — business, professional career, modern relationships — without losing the rigour of the classical framework. His case studies remain instructive precisely because they ground abstract principles in recognisable human stories.

Qianli Minggao is often recommended as a first text for serious BaZi students: clear enough to be understood without a teacher, but rich enough to reward repeated study as practice deepens.
